Does anyone have any recommendations for home security systems? We're considering getting Brinks or ADT, but as I'm perusing the internet I see all sorts of do-it-yourself alternatives like this SecureLinc web-enabled home security kit that comes with motion detectors (etc.) and sends out alerts over the phone or via the web. Has anyone used any of these systems?

I've always fancied the 12-gauge pump action shot gun.

Yes, but even a single shot works well if you keep the barrel well oiled. Any intruder seeing that 12 inches of flame and hearing the blast will not hang around to see if you have another round.

I used to own a .44 magnum revolver with a 5.5" barrel (S&W Model 29). I didn't fire factory loads very often (because it freakin' hurt after a few rounds) but I'd fire factory-loaded copper jacketed once in a while, purportedly to clean out the lead from the reloads, but really just to see the lovely blue ball of flame come out of the muzzle --about ten to fourteen inches in diameter (or so it looked from the perspective of the firer). I guess 5.5" just isn't enough barrel to burn up all the powder in a factory load.

(I was told that factory loads also rattled the spectator windows of the gun range, another reason to shoot them occasionally :-)

All are nice options, but lack the unique sound the is made whe you load the pump-action.

Yes, it should be easy to get a digital recording of a 12 gage being racked and hook the speakers up to a motion detector. I recommend an old Winchester Model 12 for best sound effects. A friend told me once that when he pulled guard duty in the brig they herded prisoners around while carrying Model 12 without a shell in the chamber. If someone got out of line he would rack the gun and everybody within 50 yards would come to attention.

Michael, I would think you of all people would be uniquely qualified to coordinate a network of cameras to autonomously and intelligently do your bidding... ;]

But if you have Monte, what more do you need?

ADT-Brinks, forget it!! I have ADT-$2200 total for a 3 yr contract. You can buy a comparable home security system for $300-yes $300. Just read the consumer affairs reports on how difficult ADT is when you try to end your service-even after your contract expires. Be smart buy a wireless system.
