You're not kidding. Got up the next day to 100+ on the hill, & we're usually 10 to 15 degrees cooler than in the vally. Wow.
And as hot as it gets in the midwest, it feels differently: 90 in StL is usually hot & muggy, but not the "lets go outside and stand under the blowtorch" 90-100 of L.A. Besides, the odds of several 100+ days in a row are higher in LA than in StL, or Chicago.
Lets put it this way: ON an abnormally hot day in the midwest, you feel hot & sticky and in need of a beer, or an ice cream. In L.A on the same, you feel like an ant under a child's magnifying glass and in need of instant shade.

Can't talk about how hot and sticky the weather is in any given area without mentioning dew points.
