I've barely had time to post because of all the spam I've been deleting recently. Spammers should be shot, I'm not even joking. Even with MT-Blacklist I can spend almost an hour each day just deleting spam comments and trackbacks, and I hate it so much. If I ever meet the people who are spamming my site I will punch them in the face.

The comment login system is acting strange. If you get an error message saying you aren't logged in when you are, just reload the comment page and try again. I'm trying to track this bug down, but it's not easy.
At work we use a very nice and very inexpensive email server program (Merak Mail Server). Its integrated anti-spam functionality is very good. Low false-positives and catches most of the spam we receive.

Just kidding. Have you tried SpamAssassin? It uses a bunch of methods in combination to classify spam. I don't know the statistics, but I probably get less than ten misclassified messages per month.

One thing that really helped the spam problem I used to have was going and turning off commenting on old posts. I eventually got to the point that I turned off comments on most posts after a week. It was time-consuming to do so at first, but it eliminated most of my spam problem.
DD: SpamAssassin is the basis for the anti-spam features of the email server package I referred to. It's pretty good, IMO.
I'm not having email spam problems. Non-bloggers may not realize it, but my blog gets a ton of spam, both fake comments and fake trackbacks. They're very tedious to delete. The software I use to try to block them is called MT-Blacklist and it's pretty effective, but it still takes a lot of time.
Megan: One feature of MT-Blacklist is that you can have it disable comments on old posts automatically. Alas, it won't disable trackbacks on old posts :/ Trackback spams are the worst, because they require the page sto be rebuilt and that's slow.
There are plugins that deal with trackbacks. Try this one
