Holy crap in a hat, didn't we just recall a governor over this nonsense? The California Assembly has passed yet another bill to give drivers licenses to illegal aliens. I don't freaking get it. I hate our legislature. No matter what we the people do they just ignore us completely and keep passing crap that we don't want. You know, we, the citizens of California. The ones who elect them and pay them to sit in air conditioned offices and fly around the state on jets and eat $100 lunches.
SACRAMENTO (AP) - Another attempt to allow illegal immigrants to qualify for California driver's licenses is one step from the governor's desk and a likely veto after a heated Assembly debate that included charges of racism.Lawmakers voted 42-34 late Wednesday to approve a bill by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, that would allow undocumented immigrants to get licenses that would have to be of a different design or color than standard licenses and would not be widely recognized as valid identification documents.
The only possible reason any American could support such a enormous load of crap is because once we issue the illegal immigrants these special licenses, maybe we can start deporting them. Ha, that'd be rich. "Oh, you've got an illegal immigrant drivers license! Here's your speeding ticket, plus I'm hauling to to ICE for deportation. Sucker!" The ironic thing is that such a rational law enforcement strategy is completely unthinkable in Califantasyland.
At least the powerless Republicans in the legislature appear to get it, despite the pathetic party apparatus in our state.
Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy, R-Monrovia, claimed the purpose of the bill was to register illegal immigrants to vote on forms available at Department of Motor Vehicle offices."One doesn't have to be a mental giant to figure out who they might vote for," he said. "I would think they would register Democratic."
But Assemblyman Rudy Bermudez, D-Norwalk, said the law bars the immigrants from voting.
The law also bars illegal immigrants from coming into California you son of a
Update:
Eugene Volokh goes through some of the math that partially explains why legislatures differ from the results of direct voting.
California's Two Electorates: The California legislature's attempt to reverse a 5-year-old 61%-39% referendum on same-sex marriage reminded me of something that political science professor Bruce Cain pointed out a while back -- states have, in a sense, two electorates: The electorate as filtered through legislative election, and the direct electorate; and the two will inherently (in many states) yield different outcomes on many issues. The most interesting reason Cain pointed to (and I realize there are many others, but I want to focus on this one) is that legislative districts have equal population, but not equal numbers of voters. Some districts consist nearly entirely of citizens, include relatively few children, and have high voting rates among eligible voters. Those districts cast many votes in statewide elections for governor, for U.S. senator, and on ballot measures. Other districts with the same population have many more noncitizens (whether legal immigrants or illegal aliens), many more children (for instance, Mexican Hispanics, Hispanics generally, and blacks have higher birth rates than whites), and lower voting rates among the eligible voters (for instance, nonwhites are more likely not to vote even when they are eligible). Those districts cast fewer votes in statewide elections. But each district elects one state assemblyman, state senator, or U.S. representative.
The idea being that elected officials represent the wishes of many people who do not vote on ballot referendums. Of course, many of the people who don't vote on ballot referendums don't vote because they aren't eligable to, so it's hard to see why they should get to have their desires expressed by a representative either. Maybe we should base districting on voter turnout rather than on census numbers?

I was a strong opponent of the original D/L for illegals bill because the D/L would have papered over the illegals' illegal status. I'm not sure why it's such a bad idea to give illegal aliens specially marked license. I'm also not sure why the illegal alien lobby thinks it's worthwhile. As recently as last year, Gil Cedillo described any special markings as a "deal-breaker" - as if to suggest there was a deal in the first place.
I am opposed to drivers licenses for illegal aliens on principle. It doesn't matter to me if they would look different from a regular drivers license and would therefore distinguish the licensee as an illegal alien. I find it ethically and morally reproachful to reward illegal, criminal behavior in any way. In this case, the reward is granting the law-breaking illegal alien the PRIVILEDGE of driving with a state-approved drivers license.
To me, bestowing a valid, California drivers license on an illegal alien is tantamount to saying, "Welcome to our country. Even though you've broken our laws and are here illegally, we won't do anything about it. In fact, we will even be so kind as to facilitate your illegal presence in this country by providing you with a license to operate a vehicle in this state. As an added bonus, you won't be ticketed for driving without a license if you are ever pulled over by a peace officer."
The whole thing is wrong, and no matter what they do to make the license different from a "citizen/legal resident" drivers license, I will never be in favor of it based on principle alone. If we aren't true to our principles and what we know to be right, how can we ever be proud of ourselves, look our children in the eye, and teach them the difference between right and wrong?
