In the wake of Katrina I've found this useful: from the American Red Cross, a list of things to include in your disaster supplies kit. Please leave comments with anything you think they may have left out.

Uh, yeah! Pack all this stuff and have the first thug with a gun TAKE it from you!

Personal firearms of your choice should be on this list.

New Orleans learns how thin the veneer of civilization is.

A gun may not guarantee security, but it comes closer than a plan to meekly hand over your goods while depending on the good graces of a band of thugs.

12 gauge, tossup between a pump and an auto loader, although the pump action on a 12 gauge is a deterrant in itself. I'd shy away from just the double barreled or over-under because of capacity issues if you have to deal with a whole lot of mofos. Plus accuracy sin't that important, just need to be in the area, perfect for the non sharpshooter to defend themselves. Maybe a pistol in reserve, a .45 for the power and the wieght (just in case you need to pistol whip someone).

By the way, have you seen the new Browning Catalog yet?

Shotgun and a handgun, one for home defense, the other if/when you have to go out on the streets from time to time. I agree 12 gauge is good for the shotgun. Handgun should be at least a .38 revolver or a 9 MM "auto," or a bit more if you can handle it. A .357 or a .40 S&W should be plenty. [I own a .50 S&W and enjoy shooting it, but would never use it for self-defense except maybe against a bear.]

Well obviously I have plenty of guns, but a) they don't go in the kit itself, because I need them all the time, and b) I don't want everyone loading up on guns, just me!

Shotgun is great for anything within 30 yards but if you are fighting roaming armed gangs, you are going to want to engage at much greater distances. Every good "Kit" should include a high capacity ar-15 variant...the ones that everyone on the left keeps trying to BAN. Dumbasses are getting a good view of that ban scenario right now.

6kings is correct. a shotgun is great inside but once you are faced with being engaged outside then the range offered by a shotgun is lacking. an ar-15 or ak type will work fine unless you need ranges beyond 300yds in which case a m1a/m14 would be my choice. there are any lessons we can learn from this. i think many people like to think we are so civilized that the things that happen "over there" can never happen here. well look and learn boys and girls. also we should note just how little help the police were to the honest folks during the first days. you are on your own when the s__t hits the fan. each man has a responsibility to protect his family. if he can't he is worthless in a crisis.

I love you guys. You're awesome.

If you use slugs, the 12 gauge can be pretty effective at more than 30 yards too and it makes big ass holes.
