DeoDuce comments on a recent example of modern "tolerance" in which offending a leftist is the greatest crime imaginable but offending a rightist is mandatory for the preservation of liberty.

If you look for something, you'll probably find it.
But what's more to the point, I suppose, is that being offended is not something the government should protect anyone from.
Lots of things (and people) offend me.. but that doesn't mean I think an act of government or a lawsuit is the proper course of action. I shrug it off as no big deal.
Leftist, Rightist... I don't care. Don't complain about being offended because, you know what? It's gonna happen sooner or later.
Eleanor Roosevelt was absolutely right: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Or, in this case, no one can deeply offend you without your consent.
.. and I'm proud to be what most people here would consider a "Leftist".
THe problem here is the woman in question using 'tolerance' to express her view, then hiding behind 'tolerance' to attack someone who disagrees with her. Its the typical thing, take the minutemen for example, they are against illegal immigration and will call the authorities when they see it and what are they called, "intolerant", "racist" and so on. tolerance is a tool 99 time out of 100 used by leftists when face with ideas they don't like. We can go on, opponents to same sex marrage, they're all "homophobes". Support tax cuts you want kids to die. The list goes on.
Oh and is that leftist as in, "my misfrotune entitles me/gives me the right to your money"?
tP: No, it's not. I'm more of a Libertarian than anything. I'm very socially liberal but also very fiscally conservative.
But, you asked a stupid question... so allow me to ask one in return:
Are you a rightist as in "my religious beliefs entitle me/give me the right to take away some of your freedoms"? (censorship, "decency laws", etc.)
".. and intrude into a private family matter ala Terri Schiavo." should've been added to the end of my question.
the Pirate said: "tolerance is a tool 99 time out of 100 used by leftists when face with ideas they don't like."
That's interesting, because...
Religion is a tool 99 times out of 100 used by rightists when faced with ideas they don't like.
Mark: But tolerance is a disingenuous tool, because it isn't used honestly. Christianity (assuming that's what yyou refer to by "religion") is open about its motives, desires, and operation.
MW: Proponents of tolerance would say it's used honestly.
Mark: Yes, but they're self-evidently wrong, which is part of why I have so little respect for them.
MW: Religion (Christianity, but others as well) aren't always used honestly. There are plenty of dishonest people who use religion as the basis of their own personal crusades.
So Mark, you are justifying a wrong by giving examples of another wrong...how "left" of you. Religion is used a lot to justify everything under the sun...not necessarily the way it is intended or written. Just look at the reference in the post a day or so ago where a preacher, of all people, mentioned watermelon and African-Americans as listed in the Bible. Misguided and probably done deliberately since the Bible is large and most couldn't call him on that. Tolerance is now being used as a weapon against anyone that disagrees with a belief or postion in the minority, especially when it is controversial and/or wrong (majority view). Most Christians tolerate other religions even though they know they are wrong. Most "tolerance police", which happen to be on the generalized "Left" can't tell the difference between saying something is wrong and true intolerance. They have it wrapped up as one thing.
6K: Actually no, I'm not justifying anything... but you're quite mistaken if you don't think religion isn't used by some in the same ways tolerance is used by others.
Mark: ... and you think I like those people?
MW: I never said you did.
