Ok, this is going to be an incredibly geeky question.... Does anyone know if the "Imperial March" from Star Wars is ever played in character, or is it always just in the soundtrack? That is, do the characters ever hear the music?

I'm not a Star Wars fan (infinitely more of a Star Trek fan myself).. but as I recall it's a soundtrack-only thing.
Are you asking if there's some sort of Imperial Marching Band that performs the piece when Vader or the Emperor arrives or something?
I've never thought of that, but I don't think so.
Not unless Darth Vader has an MP3 player inside his helmet.
...or in the lightsabers.
Well, considering that Vader's suit was invented 25 years ago, it probably doesn't have an MP3 player... but I bet that big box on his chest is an 8-track player!
But in answer to your original question, the Imperial March is solely for the soundtrack. The only music I can recall actually being a character in the movie was in Ep. IV, in the cantina, and in Ep. VI in Jabba's palace and at the Ewok celebration.
