So Bill Cosby won't be charged for drugging and fondling a woman in his mansion last year. I wasn't aware of the alleged drugging until I read this article, and in my opinion that makes the accusation much more serious. Setting the specifics of this case aside, I'm curious about what women think about unwanted fondling in general. It's obviously inappropriate and wrong in the extreme for a man to grab or touch a woman without her consent, but do you women think a criminal prosecution or a civil lawsuit are the appropriate responses? Is it sufficient to just slap the creep across the face or kick him in the nuts? Obviously the context and details are important, but would a single instance of unwanted fondling drive most women to get the police involved? My expectation is that that sort of thing happens pretty frequently at clubs and bars and what-not.

I don't get fondled frequently by strange men (unless you think my husband is strange!), but I don't think I'd sue for the first offense if the guy was apologetic when I told him I wasn't interested. Sometimes mixed messages get sent, and I'd think perhaps he just was overpowered by my awesome femininity and gorgeous body. ;) If he kept trying to fondle me on future dates, I wouldn't date him any more, but I wouldn't sue him. He's a creep, but a harmless creep.

But if, when I ask him not to fondle me he reacts with increasing pressure and the threat of horrible consequences, then in my opinion it becomes reportable. A man who just wants to fondle women but still respects their desire not to be fondled can be dealt with, but a man who does not respect that needs to be reported. An attitude like that, left unchecked, could lead to a rape, and my report of abuse could lead the police to the right person if (God forbid) he rapes in the future.

The harmless creep sees a woman as a person he can persuade. The criminal fondler sees a woman as an animal that, if whipped with the appropriate crop, can be made to do his bidding. That's the difference.
