Am I the only one who has noticed that antibiotic cream (like Neosporin, containing Neomycin sulfate, Polymyxin-B sulfate, and Pramoxine hydrochloride) does wonders for clearing up acne? There must be some sort of side effect to treating pimples with a topical antibiotic, but if so I don't see it. I had a pimple yesterday and I put some neosporin on it in the morning and it was gone by the time I went to bed last night. It worked much more quickly than any of the benzoyl peroxide or erythromycin products I've used (even though they're bactericidal).

You remind me of the Father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding who thinks the solution to life's problems is Windex.
I am not a dermatologist, but the only problem I can see with using a cream like that is that it's got an oily base (a petroleum jelly base, I think) and so it might cause more zits?
Oil doesn't make zits, bacteria does. That's why putting and leaving oily makeup on the skin doesn't create acne, and why antibiotics clear it up.
wsk: I still haven't seen it, so I hope you didn't give away anything important!
WH: Like michelle said. I know why antibiotics work, but why aren't they used for acne more generally?
I used to take oral antibiotics for my acne, and Retin-A as a topical application to get rid of them... but then, I was seeing a dermatologist and got the prescriptions.
Retin-A will burn those babies clear off your face. The antibiotics were to keep it from coming back. I think I used the stuff for only a month as a teen, and that was enough to get everything under control.
I think they use oral antibiotics for persistent cases of acne, but not in general because of the danger of developing antibiotic-resistant strains. Also, oral antibiotics can have some unpleasant side effects in women, especially women who wear fashionably tight pants like so many of our young ladies do nowadays.
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF "WINDEX" ACUALLY HELPS GET RIDE OF ACNE PLEASEEEEEEEEE HELPPPPPPP MEEEEE.
THANKSSSSSSSSSSS THANK YOU
haha yeahh i noticed that today cuz i was thinking...if bacteria causes acne...then an anti-bacterial antibiotic cream must do wonders
so windex does work for acne right?? I just want to clear this mystery up....thanks
i get zits every once in a while and i put windex on them and it makes them heal so much faster(their gone like the next day) then if i use a zit cream. I dunno if its just my skin, but it really works. i allways do it. :)
Yea, I am using neosporin at the very moment for my acne. I in fact had used neutrogena's on-the-spot acne treatment and it made large red chemical burns on my face. I was devistated...I put neoporin on it and I notice it works really well with scarring. the burns looked a whole lot better in 24 hours..and i felt a tad better. Now im seeing if this stuff works on acne as well as spots and discoloration.
I used to have perfect skin all of my life untill i was like 16 and my skin started scarring. My skin wouldnt be so bad if every zit i ever had didnt leave a scar. Every time i get any sort of zit it always leaves behind big red marks.....some on my face have been there for like over a year....its so frustrating. I have really dry (sensitive) skin so I don't know if that may contribute to it at all. I have been using mederma for a few months and i havent noticed any improvement.... Any suggestions please????
if you go to acne.org there is a heated debate going on whether neosporin will have bad long-term effects or not (such as antibiotic resistance)
I have been using Neosporin cream too, and I agree that it works wonders. But, I am worried about what effects it could have.
oh and Leanne, try using Scarzone for your red marks, it really works wonders. You should see results within a few days.
i am using neosporin too and its working!!! i cant believe it. and not causing further breakouts. i am now going to try neosporing and scarzone mixed and see if that works faster. although the neosporin already has me about 80% clear in 1 week.
I was on Lamisil tablets for a while and during that treatment my acne went to non-existent. Lamisil works through the skin so it must change the "anti-resistence" (my) skin has to bacteria.
yes i am using windex and i guess it depends if u just have one pimple or a hole area but it does work on me but i have only one in the spot.
I don't think windex helps with acne. In fact, I am sure it would make it worse. Antibacterial treatments are very helpful. Check out my blog for more information about acne and acne treatments by clicking on my name.
I found this message stream because I just discovered the wonders of using Neosporin for acne, and searched google to see if there are any official topical antibiotical creams/gels/ointments that are specifically for the face that I can buy by the bus load. Does anyone know of any? I second the first person and say that it works better than ANYTHING I've used except accutane.
what do i do? pop them and then put on the neosporin? or just put it on all the time? --- and what time should i put it on? im guessing before bed and when i wake up.
just stumbled onto this site and found all the info VERY interesting i am 27 and have had horendous acne since i was 12!! I thought it was suppose to go away when I became an adult LOL...not a chance
I wanted to share what works for me...I have treid the "acne relief" creams they sell and Rx's ,been to a dermatologist ect ect...
My best solutions that work great and are cheap and easy to use ...anti bacterial dish soap (the orange stuff) I wash my face with it a couple times a week...I don't get dry from it. I use morning and night listerine (golden kind) I just splash some on my hand and go all over my face (Don't get it in your eyes!!OUCH) in fact that has been the most wonderful discovery so far, it works like a miracle and my skin feels soft, clean and not dry at all!! (I have a dry skin problem usually with most products) and when I get a big zit I slather it with toothpast (paste not gel) at night and by morning it is usually gone, or at least coverable with concealer again, I do the t-paste each night until it's gone, usually 2 nights max.
I am going to try the windex thing today and see how that works LOL
I hope this has helped someone, i know I am SO Sensative about my acne, I do not talk about it with ANYONE not even my husband, i have never shared these little secrets either because of just that :-)
Let me know how they work for you!!

hey everyone,
i've got this huge... boil like thing on my chin, one of those under the skin things that i should have never have touched. It's incredibly painful and has not shown signs of going down for 3 days now. I've just tried windex on it so I hope that works. I had been using nutrogena on the spot, but that stung and didn't seem to do anything. Then I tried witch hazel which also stung and just seemed to dry up the skin on the surface. Should I try neosporin after the windex? Seriously I need help!
The reason Windex might work is probably for the same reason toothpaste works and salicylic acid, etc. Bacteria will only thrive in a favorable environment (like warm moist skin), so if you put stuff on it that makes that bacteria "unhappy", i.e. unable to survive, yeah, your acne will go away. Both also dry out the area. I am sure salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are more effective than Windex or toothpaste otherwise dermatologists would recommend Windex or toothpaste. However, people often use products that are actually too strong for their skin, so using toothpaste or Windex (which is milder) might appear to work better than irritating your skin with too much acne medication. As far as Neosporin goes, I'm using that right now too to see how it works =) While its true oil doesn't cause acne, too much oil can clog pores and trap dirt that clogs pores, so I don't think I'll be using the Neosporin over large areas. I have also experienced first hand the results of taking oral antibiotics for too long and developing a resistance, and the same can definitely happen with topical antibiotics . . . so whoever wanted a truckload - don't do it. Get it under control and then stop. If you can't make it go away, go see a dermatologist!
If chocolate doesn't cause acne then why is it after I ate a bag of Lindt chocolate balls with the creamy middle I ended up with a bunch of red bumps like they were clogged pores? :(

So like what kinds of stuff?
Does it mean anything if you look in a mirror 3 to 4 inches away and can "see" the color of your pores?
Hey everyone.. I just came along this site to see how everyone responded to Neutrogena helping with acne. Ive used it and I think it's great. Everyone's skin is different though! I just wanted to throw out a piece of advice. I'm now 19 but Ive had acne since I was 13! My acne is all cleared up now and I'm so happy! My MIRACLE secret - - Cetaphil Antibacterial Facial Soap!!! My cousin has horrible acne and when I had a bad breakout after using the tanning bed too much she told me that her dermatologist recommended it. You can buy it just about anywhere! I buy my soap at Wal-Mart and it's about $3. Just use it all the time in place of whatever else you wash face with. It's great!! I hope this helps!
I love Windex!!!
Ok so so far I've been using only two simple things
1. Washing my face with cold water and soap two times a day
2. After I've washed my face I take some windex, spray on some tissue and have it rubbed on my face where I have acne (not hard rubbing just wipe it on) and so far it's fading! :)
How many other people out there do you think are trying to do what we're doing using Windex or toothpaste or what not? lol
Hey i just stumbled onto this site tonight on may 11th and im wondering if someone could post a list of stuff to buy *product names*
>neosporin
>what brand of toothpaste?
>Windex
>What kind of mouthwash to put on face?
Does Neosporin work on developing zits, or do I have to wait for them to surface first?
Cuz I got a mother boiling on my chin, and I'm going to Darien Lake next friday (May 26) with about 500+ other kids from different schools, and frankly, I'd like to MAKE friends, not scare them away.
Please, Email me with answer.
Does Neosporin work on developing blemishes, or just surfaced ones?
Because, I got one about to eat my entire chin, and I'm going to Darien Lake next friday (5/28) and I need to make friends, not scare them away!

Please contact me through AIM, Email or Myspace because chances are, I won't remember how to get back her.
Thanks!

Hello everyone, I have a few observations after studying a bit of microbiology...
I would be hesitant to use Neosporin (or any other topical antibiotics) on the face for any extended periods of time. Neosporin contains Bacitracin, Neomycin, and Polymixin-B, drugs which together kill a wide range of bacteria. These drugs are ONLY found in topical ointments because they are too toxic to be used inside the human body... in addition to targeting bacterial (prokaryotic) cells, they can also harm human (eukaryotic) cells. This is why the label reads "For external use only", "Do not use over large areas of the body" and "Do not use longer than 1 week unless directed by a doctor".
Also, the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics on the face will remove its normal flora ("good" bacteria normally present which help prevent "bad" bacteria from causing problems). By killing all of the normal flora on your face, it's much easier for an opportunistic pathogen to cause a SERIOUS infection that might be resistant to most antibiotics.
Most acne is caused by Propionibacterium acnes, an anaerobic bacteria present on virtually all humans. Because it is anaerobic, it CANNOT grow in the presence of oxygen - they travel down into hair follicles, and when they become trapped under blackheads (clogs which protect them from oxygen), they multiply and form whiteheads and cause an immune response (swelling, inflammation, redness, pain, etc). It is also worth noting that blackheads AREN'T caused by dirt...the sebum produced by sebaceous glands is naturally oxidized by the air, turning black. Acne sufferers have very active sebaceous glands, not dirt on their faces.
Instead of trying to kill ALL bacteria (and some of your own cells) using Neosporin, it's better to ONLY target P. acnes. Benzoyl peroxide contains peroxide (duh!), which breaks down into oxygen. Applying benzoyl peroxide (especially after a hot shower when your pores are more open) will help prevent P. acnes from multiplying and causing whiteheads (it's an anaerobe, remember?). Caution, though: it takes quite a while for skin to become adjusted to benzoyl peroxide...start slowly!
Finally... Talk with a professional (doctor, dermatologist, etc.) before you use Neosporin regularly on your face (the cautions on the label really are important!). Accutane, a prescription which helps stop sebum production, may help, but it has its own risks. Using benzoyl peroxide for acne is widely accepted and safe (once again, start slowly!!!). Using Windex (which contains ammonia), mouthwash (which contains alcohol), toothpaste (which is very basic), etc. could make your face worse than before...beware! Finally, try to avoid squeezing... it can spread the infection, causing an even larger immune response (swelling, redness, pain, etc.)
Sorry for the long essay... hope this helps!
Hey guys. Now I can use some help. Does anyone know of a product on the market, that clears up scars? My daughter has an old white one, on her leg. Now she won't wear her shorts. Says she's too embarassed. Thanks so much.
Bev
Why is alcohol bad for spot treatments? And has anyone used proactive? It made me break out horribly. Now I dont know what to do because I stopped using it and its still getting worse! And when I try neosporin it makes spots turn to white heads.
alcohol is ultimately bad for acne because it overdries and then your skin compensates by producing a ton of oil, and you can end up worse than before.
these are the techniques I've found to work:
1. make sure you always have a clean pillowcase
2. avoid touching your face
3. when I consistently remember to take a vitamin, I dont break out. when i consistently forget, I do.
4. apply wet compresses to pimples growing under your skin to bring them to the surface quicker, so they also heal quicker
5. calamine lotion- reduces pain, swelling, dries pimples out
6. use neosporin on pimples when they're on the surface and/or trying to heal, this prevents scarring
edit: I meant to say warm, wet compresses. (I just stick a washcloth under hot water and put it on the area, then repeat like 6 times)
My son had really BAD acne that came on all of a sudden. We went to a dermatologist, he prescribed accutane and it was a MIRACLE. Aside from the dryness, especially if you wear contacts, (it drys EVERYTHING) there were no bad effects. After the course of treatment, the acne never reoccured. It was a cure, not just a treatment. It's expensive, but worth every penny> and if you have prescription drug coverage on your insurance, it's covered. Don't waste your time on creams...they work only temporarily. Accutane is amazing and it is the answer to severe acne.
For the girl with the scar on her leg: Plastic surgery is the ONLY thing to work permanently. I've tried mederma, it's a hoax as far as I'm concerned. I have a similar scar and use Sally Hansen's spray leg makeup. It does not wash off easily, it stays on and is amazing. The cost is low and it does work. I have a scar and a vein that I cover with this and I think nothing of swimming > it doesn't come off without soap, water and a washcloth, I PROMISE. Just find a close color and blend, you won't be able to tell it's there.
CAN YOU PUT BACITRACIN ON BUMPS ON YOUR FOREHEAD?I NEVER BROKE OUT IN MY LIFE AND I DON'T KNOW WHY NOW.I WONDER IF IT IS THE HEAT.PLEASE HELP
Hey, I need someones help FAST. I was taking care of my skin very well these past couple of days, so my face would be clear for picture day (wednesday!) but now i just broke out. Neosporin must help, because the other day I was scrubbing my face to hard and the top of my pimple fell off and it started bleeding, so i dabbed some neosporin on it, and woke up the next morning and it was gone, like completely. It was amazing. So then I tried to put it on some of my other pimples but it didn't do the same effect(probaly because they weren't open like that one was). but yeah, im still experimenting.=]
Just wanted to share my experience that, I also discovered the magical effects of Neomycin sulphate+Bacitracin on pimples. After I learned that bacteria is the main cause for pimmples to spread, I tried this formulae applying my common sense. And yes, it did work drammatically. It's so simple, I don't know why people don't talk about it..
Hey so does neosporin work on popped zits then? because i always pop mine and was wondering if it it would make the popped ones heal faster.
I have been using Neo-Medrol,an acne medication containing neomycin sulphate, sulphur and methlprednisolon and is working perfectly.
i have recently jsut broke out on my forehead and it s a real pain in the ass. i have a huge swollen one right by my eye and like a bunch of little ones on my forhead.. sickening.
i have really sensitive dry skin...so far i ve been washing my face and placin sum benzly peroxide.. and they got a lil smaller.. but tonight i am using neospirin, it better be gone tomorrow! beccause its christmas and i gotta see the whole family.
