Maybe others have thought of this before, but consider how the Electoral College mitigates the effects of voting fraud. No matter how many fake voters are registered in a state, all the fraud can do is turn that state's electoral votes to the other side. Fraud thus needs to be much more decentralized than it would need to be if we elected a president by popular vote, since in that case massive fraud in a single place could more easily swing the balance of the whole election.

I have been saying this for years, but not to a significant audience :) Thank you for reminding others.

In addition, consider that the NE ME? (Maine) allocation of Electoral Votes does even more. In addition, it prevents the "abandon hopeless states" election strategy. Sure would like to see it expanded to all other states.

That is a good, point, Michael.

I regret that the current system, however, means that it is unlikely that a Democratic presidential candidate will ever campaign in Oklahoma for the fall election. I think voting by states may lead to added pandering.

The electoral college reduces the costs of recounts. Can you imagine if the 2000 election had resulted in a recount in every district in the nation instead of just a few Florida counties? They'd still be counting.

Think about it. If an individual or group had changed less than 600 ballots in Florida we'd now be talking about President Gore. On the other hand if we had direct popular vote, unless someone changed over half a million votes we'd be adressing Gore as well.
