New ultrasound makes obvious the humanity of the unborn.

New ultrasound technology is making it harder and harder to deny the humanity of the unborn.
Some in Great Britain (search) are calling for the government to rein in the abortion-at-anytime laws that have been on the books since the late 1960s.

One reason for the new push against abortion is powerful 3D images that are now possible with the latest in ultrasound technology (search). It produces pictures from the womb in more detail than ever before — moving, yawning, even appearing to smile.

Wow. How do babies yawn if they're not breathing? I've always wondered that - my mother said I had hiccups, too. Same question - wonder if it wasn't just overactive rhythmic little feet.

Baby Xrlq just had his 28-week ultrasound today. Looks not unlike this one, actually, despite using the old technology.

X: I think the deal with the new technology is that you can create 3D images and rotate/pan them to see all around the baby. I'm not entirely sure though, and if I'm right then it won't be evident in just a single still frame.

BTW, given your interest in the abortion issue, I'm surprised you haven't been making more hay over Amy Richards. If I were arguing that anti-abortion position in the court of public opinion, that beeyatch, her butcher/doctor, and her wussy boyfriend are Exhibits A, B and C.

Actually, I asked my doctor about that during my last pregnancy, and she told me that the fetus sucks in amniotic fluid all the time (and the baby urinates it back out... as amniotic fluid). I was watching my daughter suck her thumb in the womb, which I found really funny. It's even funnier to me now, because she's not a thumb-sucker (she's 14 months). And yeah, the fetus can get hiccups and do all sorts of weird things in there. Once I thought she was flipping the bird at me.

In any case, as Xrlq mentions, even the "old-fashioned" ultrasound can show you alot, if the baby is in a good position. My last one usually was situated with her side up against my belly, so I always got a good profile.

No, the name doesn't mean that I deny the humanity of unborn children. I am pro-life after all. However, if you look at the upper-right of the 3-D head, you see a bright profile of a fetus. Is this picture (and therefore, the technology) a hoax, or is there some complex aspect of the technology that causes the "phantom" baby???
