Abu Ghraib prison.

Here's a satellite photo of Abu Ghraib prison -- where the recent abuses by American soldiers took place -- from 2001.

Update 050123: A couple commenters say that this isn't a picture of the prison after all, and point here for the real thing.

Does anyone know who originally built the prison? There are some... interesting angle measurments in it.

P: The Wikipedia entry doesn't say, and I can't find a construction date. I doubt the British would have built such a huge prison there 50 years ago, but I'm not that familiar with the history of the region. It's probably Ba'athist in origin.

As unofficial, self-appointed representative of the dense, I must ask -- angle measurements?

Phelps said:

Various theorists have claimed that occult groups over the ages have "encoded" certain "sacred measurements" into major works for various purposes. Washington, DC is one place that this was almost certainly done according to Masonic beliefs, and various ratios and angles are also involved in Mayan temples, Egyptian monuments, and Gothic cathedrals.

The reason that I asked is that there are several 33.3 degree angles in the design, which is considered to a sacred angle in Masonic design. The Baathist party was a Nazi creation, and the Nazis were heavily into occult symbology.

Ok, now I am REALLY in over my head. Fascinating but I suspect it would take a book or two to answer all the questions that raises.

A pharmacist at work was telling me how NASA used Masonic ideals for the naming of their runways and launch pad. I can't remember it correctly though... I remember him telling me that there are only two runways, but they're called ... umm.... 29A and 29B? And that the launch pad is launch pad 33 even though there is only one.

Again, I'm not positive.

Totally off topic, but I had to throw it out :)

I forgot to mention where the runways and launch pads were... They're at Cape Canaveral.

Which is quite an awesome place. My grandfather worked there about a decade ago and we were able to go on a tour...

You are not looking at the Abu Ghraib prison. You are looking at the neighborhood of Abu Ghraib near the Baghdad Airport. I was deployed to Iraq and my last duty post before finishing my 12-months boots-on-ground was the Abu Ghraib Prison. To see a real satelite photo of Abu Ghraib prison go to:

laballe and Mickus: Thanks for the correction!
