Lileks (or as I call him, Lily) posts a quote from John Kerry that is as confusing and incoherent as anything George Bush has ever said.

Bob Edwards: "President Bush says Sadr's defiance can't stand. What should the U.S. do?"

Kerry: "Well, ahh, huh, it's interesting to hear that, when they shut the newspaper that belongs to a legitimate voice in Iraq, and, well, let me change the term legitimate --when they shut a newspaper that belongs to a voice, because he has clearly taken on a far more radical tone in recent days, and aligned himself with both Hamas and Hezbollah, which is a sort of terrorist alignment, so it creates its own set of needs in order to deal with the possible future spread of terrorism. But at the same time, if its unaccompanied by a broader set of moves to try and broaden our own base in Iraq, um, I just think it asks for great difficulties."

Yeah, ok.

So, Mike, what does "is" mean?

Is: Third person singular present indicative of "be".

Hey Mike, It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to reply to that. But one did. Thanks for your contributions to the war.

Most people are inarticulate at some time, but I would say that on the whole Kerry is more articulate than Bush.

B: I just looked it up in the dictionary!

JT: Well, I suppose it depends what you mean by "articulate". Def 3 is "Expressing oneself easily in clear and effective language", but that almost presupposed that there's some coherent thought or position behind the speech... which Kerry doesn't often have. He doesn't seem to have real positions on anything, as if he's afraid that no matter what he says he's going to piss someone off -- which may be true.

Bush said that the vast majority of his tax cuts went to the bottom end of the spectrum. A rather articulate statement, but also untrue.

Bush has been all over the map on "nation building." He has been all over the map on "secret trials" -- against them, for them, whatever.

JT: Well I know we're not going to reach an agreement on any of that. I don't think Bush ever said the "vast majority" of tax cuts go to poor people, considering that the vast majority of taxes are paid by the top 10%. That would be impossible.

Joel Thomas said:

Michael,

Bush's exact quote was, "By far the vast majority of my tax cuts go to the bottom end of the spectrum."

I don't expect that you would believe me, for that wouldn't fit your rigid thinking.

JT: Give me a source and some context. He may have just been wrong, or he may have been talking about some specific sets of cuts. I don't see what my rigid thinking has to do with it.
