I'm consolidating these two threads for convenience.
I have an appointment with the Hawthorne City Attorney this afternoon to discuss my CCW application. I'll let you know how it goes.
Update:
The city attorney asked to reschedule for tomorrow, because he wants an internal affairs officer from the Hawthorne Police Department to be present. Kinda makes me wish I had someone to go with me, too (like a lawyer or something).
Update 2; April 15, 2004:
The CA asked to reschedule again, because apparently the Chief of Police wants to come. Probably going to happen some time next week.

Give me a year, and we'll sue the pants off the city.
TAC: Ok, but I don't know what I'll do with a huge pair of pants!
I'd go, but I'm not sure I can make it on such short notice.
X: Well if you can, my meeting is tomorrow at Hawthorne City Hall at 4:30pm! Email me :)
What's a CCW application? What's PRAR5?
I feel so ignorant.
Sorry, no can do. The earliest I could get away today would be 4:00, and I don't think there's any way I can get from here (Irvine) to Hawthorne in half an hour.
X: Too bad :/
Any other volunteers? I'm pretty prepared already, I have a lot of documentation and stuff.
You should get Eugene Volokh to go... he'd turn 'em over his knee and spank 'em! Figuratively speaking, of course.
X & TAC: Ok guys, see the update. The Chief of Police wants to come to the meeting now, so we're going to have to reschedule for next week. If you're serious about helping, please let me know if you can come to Hawthorne for a 7am meeting any day next week.
Mr. Williams...(Sorry this post is a little delayed)...
Did you, as I previously suggested, make a formal complaint against The Chief...? If so, then it would be inappropriate for him to attend any meeting whereby he may be the 'Respondant'.
Further, it sounds to me there will be something of an unfair balance in the meeting. I would ask the Attorney the reasoning behind either the Chief or Internal Affairs Rep. being present. Clearly there is a conflict...should allegations of 'misconduct' be alleged or inferred during the meeting, the Chief, with his authority would sway his subordinate (I.A. Rep), into not taking any formal complaint. My guess he will be there on a 'Fishing Expedition' - he knows the previous CCW issues are suspect (though may not have been issued under his reign) - and (1) looking to see how much potential 'hot water' he is in and (2) 'interview' you to see if you are someone he feels comfortable with, issuing a CCW to. That's his 'easy' way out. He issues the CCW and everything goes away...until the next time.
I would...cancel the 'Attorney' et al meeting. Make an appointment with the I.A. rep. - minus The Chief, and make a formal complaint of misconduct. If he refuses to take the complaint, talk to The D.A.s office. Having said that, a 'one on one' with The Chief, is still the best way to get your CCW, at this time. He holds the cards, but it's your game to win.
If you do decide to go to the meeting - with the trio, take a tape recorder and ASK to tape record the events - agree to share the tape recording if necessary. Take someone - anyone - with you, just as a witness to the procedings. An attorney might not be the best candidate, especially as this is an 'informal' affair - and perhaps outside their expertise.
I would have been more than happy to go with you to the meeting, but I reside a little too distant. I am also away on a cruise all next. week and have a lot of stuff to do before then.
Good luck!
Plug: All good ideas. I should definitely take a tape recorder, and I should inquire into the purpose of all those people at the meeting.
I didn't make a formal complaint against the chief yet, maybe I should do so. I'd like to meet with the CA in person though first because I feel like if I make a complaint I'll just piss the chief off.
I'll think about it some more and let you know how it develops.
