I had my preliminary examination for my Ph.D. today, and I passed! I'm completely mentally exhausted. Thanks to everyone who wished me well, I really appreciate the support.

If you're interested in seeing the slides from my presentation, here they are.

Congrats, Michael! I'm interested to see more of your slides (on lunch at work now). My undergrad's in Communication, and I've done some grad work there. Software developer by trade, though.

Congrats! That's got to be a load off your mind.

I suppose I could tell NOW tell you a story about a guy who FAILED his PhD oral (I didn't know him, but my roommate Jim was in the same program). When I asked if he could take it over, I was told he couldn't. He essentially had just flushed 3-4 years of work down the drain and couldn't get it back. When I asked what he did after learning about it, Jim just told me he saw him sitting in a corner muttering "I can't believe it" over and over to himself...

Thanks everyone.

DM: Wow. It's not common that people fail, but it's still high-pressure because your committee is deciding whether or not they like your direction of research. Generally, they'll let you make modifications and let you present again.

Some people have been failing out of the PhD program at UCLA though, a handful each quarter, for various exam-related reasons. That's how it goes. Separate the wheat from the chaff.

Yeah. What she said. Congratulations Michael!

Ok, went through your entire presentation. Very interesting study, results and application. Now what I would like is a console where I can 'be' one of the animants. (I know I would kick butt all over the other ones, especially with the rail gun.)

I doubt it, considering that they're running at about 25x normal speed (about 25 seconds per second).
