TMLutas at Flit concurs with my assessment of SDB's space elevator skepticism -- namely, that such skepticism is not warrented, and that the science and technology are available to make the project work.

It isn't that skepticism is warranted or unwarranted, it's just that the state of the art in that technology is simply far more advanced and they have more of the problems solved than SDB assumed in his article. He just didn't realize how quickly things are progressing recently and based his objections on largely solved problems. That doesn't mean that there aren't other problems that actually do exist that are not solved yet. Liftport has a launch date of 2018 for a reason.
Getting this cheap route to orbit working will require hard headed criticism to ensure that all the problems are solved in good time. Skeptical inquiry is appropriate, as long as it is based on current schemes, not long discredited ones.
