Via Pathetic Earthlings and XRLQ I see that the inestimable Dan Weintraub has been muzzled by his editors at the behest of the cowardly "Latino caucus" (which represents only leftist Latinos, I'm sure).
Below is the email that I sent to the SacBee ombudsman, Tony Marcano, at ombud@sacbee.com.
Dear Sacramento Bee,
I'm a resident of Los Angeles, and I'd never even heard of the Sacramento
Bee until I started reading Dan Weintraub's blog, California Insider.
Since then, I've added your main news site to the link list on my website,
and you've become my first destination for California-related news.
But now I've learned that you have forced Mr. Weintraub to blog through an
editor, under government pressure. You should be ashamed! No matter how
benign such editing may be, it will certainly affect Mr. Weintraub's
timeliness, and reflects rather poorly on your paper. As long as Mr.
Weintraub gets his facts straight and doesn't commit libel, what's the
point of editing his blog? Purely to appease the Latino caucus?
Get a grip. A blog isn't a newspaper, and can't be governed like one.
This new practice may make the management feel more comfortable, but it
drastically undermines the principles of blogging, and undercuts Mr.
Weintraub's credibility as a blogger.
I hope you reconsider your new position.
Sincerely,
Michael Williams
